1000 Point Tournament: preparing my army list

I have just entered into a 40k tournament; i have never been to a 40k tournament before so i’m looking forward to the experience. The only issue with it is that its only a 1000 point tournament so i need to scale back my armies to fit in, which if you look at my current list (wraithstar) that wouldn’t work so well. With that immovable obstacle in my way i need to approach this in a different direction, so its army list time.

Currently i have several armies to choice from, some how ever aren’t painted, some are in bits, and other i don’t want to use. So that leaves me with 3 choices, and i need to pick my army soon so i can get it as painted as possible for the event. The 3 choices for me are:

1.       Eldar: Well that was bloody obvious now wasn’t it
2.       Dark Eldar: While not as painted as the eldar, i think i might be able to knock together enough models to be respectable, however i don’t have some key units.
3.       Space wolves: This army is very old but if i just take long fangs and grey hunters what else will i need?

1000 points, now before i go into writing an army list i need to think what my opponents might or might not use. From what i know about the club, there are a lot of ork players, chaos space marines, and a couple marines verities. So i need to be able to take out hoards, MEQs and probably some big tanks. Well that didn’t help me at all. Onto the lists:

Eldar 999

Farseer – 135
Runes of warding, guide, doom, spirit stones

6 Dire avengers – 72

6 Dire avengers – 72

3 war walkers – 180
Scatter lasers

3 war walkers – 180
Scatter lasers

5 Fire dragons – 80

Wave serpent – 100
Twin linked shuriken cannon

5 Fire dragons – 80

Wave serpent – 100
Twin linked shuriken cannon

Now this list has a lot of strength 6 shot, perfect for taking out hoards and the odd small marine unit. The fire dragons might take out terminators or heavy armour. It does lack in the troops department though so it would be difficult to take objectives. I should probably look into changing that but at such low points i’m not sure i can with out loosing something else.

Onto the second army,

Dark eldar: 996

Archon – 95 w/ incubi
Venom blade, shadow field

Haemonculus – 55 w/ incubi
Venom blade

5 Warriors – 60
Blaster

Venom – 65
2 x splinter cannon

5 Warriors – 60
Blaster

Venom – 65
2 x splinter cannon

7 wyches – 84
Haywire grenades

Raider – 60
Disintegrator cannon

6 Incubi – 132

Raider – 60
Dissintagreator cannon

Ravager – 105
3 x Lance

Razorwing – 155
Flicker field

This army has an extra troop choice, all the guns can hurt infantry regardless of toughness, with a lot of (7) lance weapons and a squad with haywire grenades. It also has something the eldar doesn’t have, a capable combat squad which can scare even terminators.

Actually right now i have changed my mind, screw space wolves its either eldar or dark eldar. I haven’t used them in a while and i don’t want to change that now. I’m learning to play with my eldar so its either dark eldar or regular. So which of these two armies would fare better? How would you improve them? I need help here.

The army will probably change a lot before i have to submit it.

  1. Hi,

Both lists are good, I'm biased so I'd say take Dark Eldar, but both lists should do fine.

For small tweaks, how about losing a dire avenger from each unit to upgrade the wave serpents shuriken catapuls to shuriken cannons (as fast vehicles can now fire 2 weapons when they move 12").

In the Dark Eldar list how about splitting the power between incubi and the wyches by putting one of the characters in the wyches.

Looking forward to reading how you get on.
